The AV cable we demanded from Microsoft back during the previous generation has finally arrived. Our cries were heard in Redmond and with the new Xbox 360, a cable that outputs the console’s video signal in VGA format is, at last, a reality.

Is the cable what we were asking for? How does it perform? Continue reading to find out.

Available at launch (and really hard to find – at least in our area), the Xbox 360 VGA HD AV cable is a first-party AV cable that has a DV-15S VGA connector, stereo audio cables, and a Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound optical output similar to the one found on the Xbox 360 Component HD AV Cable.
Why the need of a VGA cable you may ask? Well, aside from the fact that many HDTVs have VGA inputs, many of us are stuck to a computer monitor and having the possibility to attach a console to the same monitor that you use with your desktop computer is definitely a relief. Back in the previous generation, it was a great experience to play the Xbox on a widescreen LCD monitor and now that the Xbox 360 plays all games, even the backward compatible Xbox ones, in high resolution, a VGA cable is more than welcomed.

Installation

Installation is pretty easy and straightforward. All you have to do is connect the AV connector of Xbox 360 VGA HD AV cable in the AV port found on the back of your Xbox 360, with the console turned off obviously. Then, connect the VGA cable to the VGA input on your monitor or HDTV.

Depending on your audio system you’ll need to either connect the left and right (white and red) audio connectors to the audio input on your monitor, receiver or amplifier. If you have a surround sound system with digital audio input, connect the audio digital output found on the AV connector of Xbox 360 VGA HD AV cable with your system using an optical cable.

Turn on your console and go to the System blade and enter Console Settings, then enter the Display and Audio tabs to choose the appropriate settings.

In case you have an LCD flat screen monitor, you’ll have to check your monitor’s native resolution in order to select a resolution that matches your panel resolution, or one that is close to it.

You don’t have to be afraid of choosing an inadequate resolution because when you change your console’s output setting, you will be asked if the picture is viewable. If the picture does not appear within 10 seconds, your console will change back to its original settings. This is similar to the process implemented in the Windows operating system for the Display window.
